Windows Embedded Compact 7 runs on mini6410 out of box

Elliott
Anyone interested in running Microsofts latest OS the Windows Embedded
Compact 7 (formely Wince 6) will be able to run it on the mini6410 using
the shipped smdk6410 BSP included in the latest Platform Builder from
Microsoft.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee479168.aspx

I have the 1Gb version of the mini6410 with 256mb of ram using the 7" lcd
display initially purchased with a mini2440.

the WEC7 can be downloaded at no cost for a free 180 day trial.

no I am not a rep for microsoft or Bsquare or other, just a hobbyist with a
love for embedded stuff.

I was able to boot using superboot and install the nk.bin onto the nand,
and then booted up the WEC7 nk.bin on the board.

I dont think the BSP is fully optimized or all hardware on the mini6410
supported, but it does bootup fine, if you have a usb to rs232 adapter, you
can plug the serial port on the mini6410 to a teratem or hyperterminal
session for debug info when the system boots up.

if you have tried this already and would like to share any of your
experiences or code, I would love to hear more.

I'm somewhat against the new stuff because I think WinCE7 uses silverlight
now. I Still like .NET CF.

Elliott
I know nothing about silverlight nor am I a big fan of it. I wish microsoft
would have stuck with html5, c# etc

but it appears to be possible to still use .net CF 3.5 for app development
for WEC7 as per the following article:

http://www.embedded101.com/Blogs/SamuelPhung/tabid/72/entryid/211/Compac...

I have not tried this article, just found it online. I am not an expert in
.net CF or c# programming either.

while I compiled the WEC7 OS in PB, I noticed you can cook in .net 3.5 CF
into nk.bin image just like in wince 6.xx series

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg158497
so .net cf is still around.

any feedback here would be helpful.

I could have sworn that I read from somewhere that WCE7 uses XML with Phone
7 (aka .NET CF 4.0). This is not backwards compatible with the older
versions. Anyways, you've just proven this wrong. Now I'm interested.
However, could you make this run on Mini210S? Price difference is not much,
but Mini210S is way more powerful.

Elliott
based on a google search it seems folks have ported wince 6 bsp code to
windows embedded compact 7.

there are even youtube videos apparently of 210 processor running WEC7.

porting wince 6 code to wec7 doesnt seem as complicated as going from wince
5 to wince 6.

if you find anything useful please post.

I dont have a mini210s, so I have no way of testing anything from my end.

Hello Mindee,

I can definitely give it a try. Please let me know exactly whats expected
etc.

I am a big windows embedded OS fan and I find programming in C# a big plus.

Are you from Arm9 or Friendly Arm.

Regards.

Elliott
Hello Mindee,

How do I email you besides posting on the forum here? I dont see you email

Hi,

I could install Windows Embedded Compact 7 on Tiny6410, but mouse, touch

Hi Elliot,

Thanks for the information. We are trying to install Win 7 compact on
Mini6410 but having problem. Once we install it, boots up but stucks with
the logo.

I don't think we have the smdk6410 installed. Do we have to get Samsung
smdk6410?

Have any recommendations?

Thanks

Hello,
Did someone succeed to have a full working wince7 nk.bin ?
My nk.bin almost works, but the SD card doesn't seem to work for the
moment.
